         The theme of this year’s conference is Global Cooperation Towards Equity. When considering the United Nations’ role and actions on a global scale, this was a topic that came to mind. As you may know, the goal of the United Nations is to maintain global peace through international diplomacy. This is something that is highlighted and strived towards at every Model United Nations conference. However, at this year’s conference, we would like to take things a step farther, and discuss how the nations involved in this international organ have been cooperating together to achieve equity.

         What is equity, and why is it important? According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, equity is “the situation in which everyone is treated fairly and equally.'' Although it sounds similar to equality, it is important to distinguish between the two. Equality means equal treatment, and equity means equal consideration. To us, this means that everyone gets what they need in order to be treated fairly. This means taking into account social differences, and working towards making our society both inclusive and adaptive of these differences. How can we describe this in simple terms? It means that a young Syrian refugee has the same access to education as his German peers. It means that an elderly woman has the same access to proper healthcare as a young transgender child. It means that a black teenager is considered equal to a white middle-aged man in the court of law. It means that no matter who we are, we all have equal consideration by our government and by our society, and we are all granted access to what we need in order to live. Equity is reached by making the necessary sacrifices and commitments so that every nation and individual can be granted the minimum they require in order to live successful lives. 

         Of course, this idea of an equitable society sounds nice, but we know that it does not reflect the circumstances of our world today. In fact, we are very far from reaching this utopian society that we have described. This is where the idea of global cooperation comes in. As a society, it is our responsibility to work towards this goal. Each individual is capable of making a small difference working towards this goal. If we collectively do our part to work towards equity, we can begin to move in the right direction. 

          The concept of equity is evident in the United Nations. The basis of diplomacy is to create relations between nations in order to cooperate with each other, and in the UN, that cooperation comes at times with compromise and sacrifices. However, all of the nations come together under the understanding that they are working towards the common good. This is something which the UN applies through consensus, a unanimous vote of agreement. Consensus is a concept that is based on reaching common ground, however small that may be. In this regard, equity and consensus are similar, as equity requires that everyone gets enough to live a substantial life. 

In the UN, all resolutions are passed unanimously by consensus. Why? Because if even a single member votes no, that means that member feels they are being misrepresented in the resolution. Resolutions do not focus on aiding only one group, but helping all parties involved in the issue, which is why it is sometimes necessary for everyone involved to make sacrifices for the common good. Diplomacy and international relations rely on this, which is why it is crucial for equity to play an important role in not only our conference, but all our lives. 

         Throughout our conference, this is the goal we wish to achieve. We want the delegates to not only learn about cooperation towards equity, but to be able to take these skills they learned beyond MUN. Understanding other perspectives and striving towards equity is what our society desperately needs. By educating current generations about the importance of global cooperation towards equity we hope to become a generation of young leaders who can lead the world towards a better future. The idea of reaching equity and consensus with those around you is not something that can only be applied to debate, but to most life situations you will find yourself in. If you live your life not only focused on yourself but also focused on helping others, you will live a happier and more fulfilling life.

Nuestro Tema

El tema de la conferencia de este año es la cooperación global hacia la equidad.  Al considerar el papel y las acciones de las Naciones Unidas a escala mundial, esta fue la idea que vino a la mente. Como sabrán, el objetivo de las Naciones Unidas es mantener la paz mundial a través de la diplomacia internacional.  Esto es algo que se destaca y busca en cada conferencia modelo de las Naciones Unidas. Sin embargo, este año, nos gustaría llevar este objetivo más allá y discutir cómo las naciones involucradas en este órgano internacional han cooperado juntas para lograr la equidad.

       ¿Qué es la equidad y por qué es importante? Según el diccionario del inglés de Cambridge, la equidad es "la situación en la que todos reciben un trato justo y equitativo". Aunque esto suena similar a la igualdad, es importante distinguir entre los dos. Igualdad significa igualdad de trato, y equidad significa igualdad de consideración.  Para nosotros, esto significa que todos tienen lo que necesitan para recibir un trato justo. Esto significa tener en cuenta las diferencias sociales y trabajar para que nuestra sociedad sea inclusiva y adaptable a estas diferencias. ¿Cómo podemos describir esto en términos simples? Significa que un joven refugiado sirio tiene el mismo acceso a la educación que sus compañeros alemanes.  Significa que una mujer mayor de edad tiene el mismo acceso a la atención médica adecuada que un niño transgénero joven. Significa que un adolescente negro se considera igual a un hombre blanco de mediana edad en los tribunales de justicia. Significa que no importa quiénes somos, todos tenemos la misma consideración por parte de nuestro gobierno y de nuestra sociedad, y todos tenemos acceso a lo que necesitamos para vivir una vida plena. La equidad se alcanza haciendo los sacrificios y compromisos necesarios para que cada nación y cada individuo pueda obtener el mínimo que necesita para vivir una vida exitosa.

       Por supuesto, esta idea de una sociedad equitativa suena bien, pero sabemos que no refleja las circunstancias de nuestro mundo actual. De hecho, estamos muy lejos de llegar a esta sociedad utópica que hemos descrito. Aquí es donde entra la idea de la cooperación global. Como sociedad, es nuestra responsabilidad trabajar juntos hacia este objetivo. Cada individuo es capaz de hacer una pequeña diferencia trabajando hacia este objetivo, y si colectivamente hacemos nuestra parte para trabajar hacia la equidad, podemos empezar a avanzar en la dirección correcta.

        El concepto de equidad es evidente en las Naciones Unidas.  La base de la diplomacia es crear relaciones entre las naciones para cooperar entre sí, y en la ONU, a veces esa cooperación solo llega con compromisos y sacrificios. Sin embargo, en estas instancias, todas las naciones se unen bajo el entendimiento de que están trabajando por el bien común. Esto es algo que la ONU aplica por medio del consenso, o un voto de acuerdo unánime. El consenso es un concepto que se basa en alcanzar un terreno común, por mas pequeño que sea.  En este sentido, la equidad y el consenso son similares, ya que la equidad requiere que todos reciban lo suficiente para vivir una vida sustancial.

En la ONU, todas las resoluciones se aprueban por unanimidad por consenso. ¿Por qué? Porque si incluso un solo miembro vota no, eso significa que ese miembro siente que no esta siendo representado en la resolución.  Las resoluciones no se centran en ayudar a un solo grupo, sino en ayudar a todos los que están involucradas en el tema, por lo que a veces es necesario que todos los involucrados hagan sacrificios por el bien común. La diplomacia y las relaciones internacionales se basan en esto, por lo cual es crucial que la equidad desempeñe un papel importante no solo en nuestra conferencia, sino en todas nuestras vidas.

       A lo largo de nuestra conferencia, este es el objetivo que deseamos alcanzar.  Queremos que los delegados no solo aprendan sobre la cooperación hacia la equidad, sino que puedan utilizar estas habilidades que aprendieron más allá de MUN. Comprender otras perspectivas y luchar por la equidad es lo que nuestra sociedad necesita desesperadamente. Al educar a las generaciones actuales sobre la importancia de la cooperación global hacia la equidad, podemos convertirnos en una generación de líderes jóvenes que puedan guiar al mundo hacia un futuro mejor.  La idea de alcanzar la equidad y el consenso con los que te rodean no es algo que solo se pueda aplicar al debate, sino que en la mayoría de las situaciones de la vida te encontrarás. Si vives tu vida no solo enfocado en ti mismo sino también en ayudar a los demás, vivirás una vida más feliz y más plena.
